Willy Wonka is a character created by writer Roald Dahl for his 1964 children’s book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”
The novel spawned two movies. In the first version in 1971, directed by Mel Stuart, Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) was depicted as a creative eccentric genius who bewildered people with his antics. Film critics acclaimed Wilder’s performance, some saying it was his best ever.
In 2005, Tim Burton directed a different version, starring Johnny Depp in the title role. Depp’s interpretation was, naturally, different from Wilder’s and Wonka’s behavior in this movie was viewed more as a character flaw.
