The word “awesome” has become one of the most overused adjectives in language today.
Its popularity has been heightened by the growth of the internet and social networks in which almost everything is described as awesome; people, events, places, movies, and rock concerts, to mention a few examples.
Surprisingly, considering that it is used far more in the United States than it is in the United Kingdom, the word originated in Early Modern English between 1590-1600, from the combination of awe + some.
The original meaning of awesome was something extremely impressive or daunting, inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear.
Today, it seems to be used by those with an apparently limited vocabulary in place of more accurately descriptive options such as:
Breathtaking, awe-inspiring, magnificent, wonderful, amazing, stunning, staggering, imposing, stirring, impressive, formidable, fearsome, and dreaded.
It also frequently replaces the more informal descriptions such as:
mind-boggling, mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, excellent, and marvelous.
