If you’re struggling for inspiration as to what to do with all that wasted space out back this summer, it’s time for some fantastic backyard ideas.
Many of us buy or rent properties that have a backyard of some description. Often people look outside and see they have more than ample space to create a wonderful outdoor area.
But, of course, as with all things, such a project takes time and effort and most importantly money! But that’s where we come in as we set out five of the very best backyard ideas that look great and don’t have to break your pocket.
The first thing you need to do is to assess the size of the area so you can decide which backyard ideas suit you best.
Is the area out back or perhaps out front? Is it square or long or circular? Is it in the sun in the shade? It’s worth spending some time and doing your due diligence to establish what you’re working with so you can create a clear picture in your mind’s eye of what you want to achieve.
Even if you only have a tiny space and are working with a low budget, there are loads of great backyard ideas out there that can really help you brighten up your outside areas for the summer.
So here it is, Lifedaily‘s list of the five most fantastic backyard ideas for this summer:
1. The Shed Office
Many people these days find themselves working from home and as long as you have a decent internet connection you can do just that. But what about the distractions? The kids and the phone and the cleaning lady?
A shed office is a great option if you find yourself working from home and with a bit of space out back. You can pull off a decent shed office for around $1800 all-in. The shed itself being the most expensive item.
On top of that you’re gonna need some basic decorations, a desk, electricity outlet etc. Then some pushpin wallboards and a few plants and you’re good to go.
2. Mosaic Path or Garden Furniture
Mosaics are a fantastic and cost effective way to brighten up your backyard with a whole bunch of options at your disposal.
If you have the wherewithal for a large project and have time on your hands, getting a bunch of old tiles, some tile cutters and some special glue could have your backyard path looking great for years to come.
If you fancy a slightly smaller project then you can opt for making a mosaic out of the garden table or chairs or even a small coffee table.
You’ll need some grouting, some safety goggles and a bunch of patience and you’re set o go.
3. Go Lawn Free
Even though in the 70’s and 80’s pristine lawn gardens were all the rage, people soon realized they took a lot of maintenance and time and work.
These days many people opt for the simpler and often prettier option of a lawn free garden incorporating features such as large plant pots, gravel paths and small easy to maintain flower beds or vegetables.
You can go lawn free for a small initial outlay and then introduce items to your backyard gradually, as you come across them.
4. Backyard Dining Room
You might not think that your backyard is the obvious place for a dining room but it can be great, especially for the summer months if you are planning on entertaining a lot.
If you have a large shed or outhouse it’s simple enough to convert it cheaply and introduce a dining room table and chairs. Some soft lighting and low background music can really help to give you the feeling that you are dining at a resort, especially if you have a good view to enjoy.
A wood floor is best for such a project and many people prefer an overall wooden chalet type feel for the backyard dining room.
5. Mini Kids Adventure Park
Why drive miles and pay a fortune to go to the local adventure park when you can create a mini one right in your backyard?
Okay, so it may not be quite as big or as fun, but it’s better than nothing if your backyard space isn’t being used anyway.
A good size paddling pool, a slide and swings, or a cheap multi-climbing frame are all great options.
But, you could also go for an assault course type theme for your adventure park incorporating flat water slides, tunnels and nets. Whatever you decide, you can choose from a bunch of options at your local kids outdoor store.
