Sure they’re cute and fluffy and loyal as well as lots of other good things,but why are they popular as pets? Well, I’m not sure I can answer that question in just a few short words now, and anyway it is a philosophical question and today we aren’t gonna get real philosophical. Instead, we thought we’d just hit you with some fascinating but well known facts about dogs and blow your mind, just a little bit.

1. Puppies have 28 teeth and normal adult dogs have 42.
Wow! they grow an additional 14 teeth as they become adults?!
2. The Newfoundland breed of dog has a water resistant coat and webbed feet.
It was originally bred to help haul nets for fishermen and rescue people at risk of drowning.
3. Dogs chase their tails for a number of different reasons, among them: curiosity, exercise, anxiety, predatory instinct or, of course, because they might have fleas!
4. Dalmatian puppies are pure white when they are born and develop their spots as they grow older.
5. Dogs dream like us!
Research has shown that canines have the same type of SWS (slow wave sleep) and REM (rapid eye movement) as children and during this sleep phase can have dreams. The twitching and paw movements that occur during their sleep are signs that your doggy is dreaming.
6. Dogs’ eyes contain a special membrane, called the tapetum lucidum, which allows them to see in the dark even if they don’t eat their carrots!
7. According to a Petside.com poll 72% of dog owners believe their dogs can detect when a storm or extreme weather conditions are on the way.
8. Don’t sweat it doggy!
Unlike humans who sweat from each and every pore dogs only sweat through the pads of their feet.
9. Unlike us dogs have three eyelids!
An upper lid, a lower lid and the third lid, called a nictitating membrane or “haw,” which helps keep the eye moist and protected.
10. Why is rover’s nose always wet?
Dogs’ noses secrete a thin layer of mucous that helps them absorb scent. They then lick their noses to sample the scent through their mouth.
