Frankenstein was the name of a novel written by Mary Shelley and published in 1818.
She intended for it to be an allegory for how mankind was developing, particularly with regard to the Industrial Revolution. Some commentators consider this to have been one of the best sci-fi stories of all time.
However, Shelley could never have envisioned what would happen to her plot and characters once the movie industry got hold of it almost 100 years later.
The first known film, simply called “Frankenstein”, was made in 1910 by the Edison Film Company. Since then, Hollywood, and countries throughout the world, have produced almost 70 different movies about her concept.
Well, actually, hardly any of them bore any relation to her concept, other than featuring a man named Frankenstein who created a “monster.”
Undoubtedly, the classic1931 version, which featured Boris Karloff as the monster, became the iconic benchmark for all Frankenstein type movies that followed.
It is for that reason that our LifeDaily team decided to choose the Frankenstein Quotes from that version out of the thousands of quotes from other films.
For clarification, these are the characters:
Heinrich “Henry” Frankenstein – a young scientist.
Victor Moritz – a friend of his fiancee.
Dr. Waldman – his old medical professor.
Fritz – a servant.
And this is our selection of Frankenstein Quotes:
- Victor Moritz: You’re crazy!
- Victor Moritz: Henry – In the name of God!
- Frankenstein: Look! It’s moving. It’s alive. It’s alive… It’s alive, it’s moving, it’s alive, it’s alive, it’s alive, it’s alive, IT’S ALIVE!
- Frankenstein: Oh, in the name of God! Now I know what it feels like to be God!
- Doctor Waldman: You have created a monster, and it will destroy you!
- Frankenstein: Down! Down, you fool!
- Frankenstein: The brain you stole, Fritz. Think of it. The brain of a dead man waiting to live again in a body I made with my own hands!
- Frankenstein: The neck’s broken. The brain is useless. We must find another brain.
- Frankenstein: You’re quite sure you want to come in?… Very well.
- Frankenstein: Crazy, am I? We’ll see whether I’m crazy or not.
- Frankenstein: [after screaming is heard] It’s Elizabeth!
- Frankenstein: Help! Help!
- Frankenstein: Quite a good scene, isn’t it? One man, crazy – three very sane spectators!
- Doctor Waldman: The brain which was stolen from my laboratory… was a criminal brain.
- Frankenstein: [Raises a glass of wine to offer a toast.] Well, as I said before, here I say again, Here’s… Here’s to a son… to the House of Frankenstein.
If you haven’t already done so, you really need to see the movie to appreciate these Frankenstein Quotes and understand their context.
The most recent re-make of the story was in 1994, and was aptly named ” Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein,” since it was one of only a handful of versions that made any attempt to adhere to the novel. Robert De Niro played the monster!
Did you see it? How many Frankenstein movies have your seen? Which was your favorite?
