Most people go on vacation for sun and sea, some quaint restaurants and cafes, and a whole lot of peace and quiet… But then there are the adventurers, and this ones for them. We’re going beyond far bungee jumping, skydiving and deep sea diving; sure, those are good for some cheap thrills. However, the adventures we’re about to show you are of a very different and disturbing nature. Believe it or not, these places actually exist; so for those looking for some excitement in their lives, put these 20 most disturbing places in the world on your bucket list… 1. Capela dos Ossos – Portugal This so-called “Chapel of Bones” was the brainchild of a 16th century monk, who decorated the structure with the bones of an estimated 5,000 of his fellow monks. A disturbing place to visit indeed, although rather fascinating. 2. The Island of the Dolls – Mexico It’s a tiny little island near to Mexico City, and boy is it creepy. A man who lived on the island, Julián Santana Barrera, hung dolls which he found floating in the nearby river, over a period of 50 years! 3. The Stanley Hotel – Colorado You may recognize this now-iconic building, which is where Steven King was inspired to write ‘The Shining.’ There’s just something so eerie and disturbing about this place, it’s no wonder King decided to write the book. 4. Poison Garden – England The image you see here was taken at the Alnwick Garden in England. But visitor beware, as in 2005, toxic and poisonous plants and flowers were added to this tourist attraction, mainly for ‘research.’ 5. Jacob’s Well – Texas It sure looks amazing, and you can certainly dive as deep as you want to, but is it safe? There’s a labyrinth of underwater caves which you don’t want to get stuck in. At least 8 people have in fact died as a result of getting stuck. 6. Centralia, Pennsylvania This place became a ghost town back in the 80s, when an underground fire released toxic fumes, meaning that the town had to be all but evacuated. 7. “Door to Hell” – Turkmenistan This aptly name place is a natural gas field which Soviet engineers tried to burn off in the early 70s. It wasn’t such a good idea, as it’s still burning strong today! 8. Pripyat, Ukraine This is the custom-made city near to Chernobyl, where the nuclear fallout took place all those years ago. The nearby town of 50,000 residents was evacuated, along with the theme park that was in it. 9. San Zhi Resort – Taiwan This resort, just outside Taipei, was stopped after strange accidents and suicides took place there. No one knew what was going on there, but they were so scared that they halted the project altogether. 10. Maunsell Sea Forts – The North Sea Built by the British during WWII, these strange forts are still standing, somewhere in the North Sea. They might be empty, but they are still there. 11. Cambridge Military Hospital – England This famous British hospital treated soldiers from way back when, up until 1996 when the facility closed. It closed due to spiralling costs and the discovery of asbestos. 12. Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital – Germany It’s a derelict and pretty scary place to visit today. And bear in mind that Adolf Hitler himself was actually treated here, along with many other Nazi monsters. 13. St. George’s Church – Czech Republic At first glance this might look like shrouded women, engaged deeply in prayer in this church. However, they are in fact plastic sculptures, installed by artist Jakub Hadrava, and is now a real tourist attraction. 14. Leap Castle – Ireland This castle isn’t so much disturbing as it is mesmerising, located in the picturesque countryside of the Irish hills. Many consider the place haunted until this very day. 15. Kryziu Kalnas – Lithuania How disturbing is this place?! Called the “Hill of Crosses,” this religious site has been a hub for Lithuanian Christians for more than 150 years. The hill reportedly has a staggering 100,000 crosses today. 16. Sanctuary of Tophet – Tunisia This eerie underground tomb in Tunisia is scary enough at first glance. But how about the fact that during hard times, thousands of children were sacrificed here, in order to appease the gods. 17. Poveglia – Italy In English, this place is called “Plague Island” as it was a place of forced quarantine for plague victims from 1793 to 1814. There are still mass graves at Poveglia, and it is thought that doctors carried out experiments of an unsavory nature on patients. 18. Hashima Island – Japan The abandoned island off the coast of Nagasaki was home to over 5,000 as a mining community, until the mines ran dry in 1974. The island was left to rot and now stand as time capsule over 40 years later. 19. Subway System – Ohio Once upon a time there were attempts to build a subway in Ohio, but the project ran out of funding, back in the 1990s. 20. Akodessewa Market – Togo Last but not least is this dead monkey market in Togo. Monkey heads are considered to have medicinal properties, and are sold here by the dozen, daily.
