Love is perhaps the most powerful of emotions, even more so than fear. If someone fears you they will probably avoid you, granting you little to no power over them. However, if that same person loves you, they render themselves completely vulnerable to your every whim, regardless of how sinister that whim may be.
When two Texas lovers were faced with the possibility of losing one another, they couldn’t stand the thought. But what was thought to be a mutual pact between them would turn out to be a twisted and horrific crime in the making…
May
In early May of 2017, the trial began for Kenneth Amyx. He stood accused of viciously murdering his then girlfriend, Jennifer. Prosecutors went for the death penalty, while his lawyers argued another side to the story.
Defense
The attorneys for Amyx plan on pleading insanity in their defense. Kenneth was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which his attorneys are blaming for the murder. To their disadvantage, Kenneth was facing time for another case he was recently charged for…
February
In February of 2016, Amyx was charged with continuous sexual abuse on a child under the age of 14 in Rockwell County, Texas. In addition, warrants are outstanding for indecent exposure to a minor in Dallas County. According to reports, both incidents involve the same minor. Amyx allegedly assaulted the young girl starting when she was just 13 years old.
Tapes
During the trial for sexual assault, Six DVD’s were brought to court and presented to the jury. These recordings included hours and hours of interrogation where Amyx admits to the sexual assault of a minor. The tapes horrified the jury, and he was found guilty.
Reasoning
The previous charges that Amyx faced in regard to the minor played a major role in his current murder charge. Amyx claimed to his lawyers that this was a main reason that he and his late girlfriend, Jennifer, ‘committed suicide.’
Prison
Amyx had faced prison time for the awful acts he committed against the 13-year-old girl. The amount of time he faced had not yet been determined, as the case was ongoing. The thought of having to separate from his girlfriend Jennifer left the two of them distraught…
Initial Plan
According to Amyx, he and Jennifer had been friends for a long time, which lead to their love affair. When Amyx became a wanted man, Jennifer did not know how she could live without him. They planned on running away together, according to the affidavit.
Pact
Amyx told investigators that he and Jennifer threw away the runaway plan and decided on a suicide pact. They were to stab each other to death so that they did not have to live this life together alone. However, things went wrong when Jennifer became too weak to kill Amyx. “I cut you, you cut me. I cut you, you cut me,” Amyx repeated to police…
Drinking
Quite a few drinks were consumed the night of the suicide attempt. Amyx’s account of the night starts when the two went to the bedroom with two knives. He initiated the cutting by cutting the back of Jennifer’s neck, and then the two swapped on and off.
Twisted
The sick and twisted fantasy continued. According to Amyx, Jennifer said he was not cutting her hard enough and he proceed to slice even further. She said that she was getting cold and weak and could not continue. Amyx then held the knife in her hand and cut herself hard.
Phone Calls
The dying pair made one last phone call. According to reports, Amyx called his father and said, “This is Ken. I love you. We’re cutting our throats.” Additionally, Ken sent horrifying photos of the incident to Jennifer’s mother.
Police
Upon receiving the horrifying photos, Jennifer’s mother immediately phoned police. She shrieked in horror as she described the photos to the authorities and insisted they rush over to their residence. She told authorities, “They are going to kill each other!”
As if this story couldn’t get any more bizarre, Amyx brought it to a new level. He began posting photos of the incident to his Facebook, for all family and friends to see. Police began receiving calls left and right to attend to the incident immediately.
Horror Source
Police rushed over to the residence of Amyx and Jennifer. Their apartment complex was locked, and they were forced break in through the garage. What they found was a bloodbath. Amyx was blood-soaked, lying on top of Jennifer in the bedroom.
Double Suicide
Initially, police thought that both Amyx and Jennifer were dead. It appeared to be a double suicide. However, soon they noticed a motion from Amyx. Jennifer was covered in cuts on her neck, wrists and forearms…
Alcohol
The autopsy results stated that Jennifer was so highly intoxicated that night that her reactions were slower than the average person. Additionally, she bled out much faster due to the thinning of her blood. This could have contributed to the reasons why her night was fatal, and Amyx’s was not.
Ambulence
Police left the scene of the crime and escorted Amyx to the hospital in an ambulance. The entire ride he was quoted saying, “Oh I killed her, oh I lost her. I will never get her back, just kill me.” The jury was left to decide if they believed his words, or if it was all an act.
Photos from the social media website were used in court to convict Amyx. Friends of Jennifer had initially tried to have the photos removed from Facebook immediately. However, they said Facebook responded letting them know it could take up to a whole 36 hours to remove the photos…
You’re Who?
In a weird turn of events, Amyx proclaimed, “I am God,” during court proceedings. The jury was neither amused nor convinced that Amyx was God, nor innocent of the crimes he was accused of. And so, Kenneth Amyx was found guilty for the murder of Jennifer Streit-Spears and, after a remarkably short jury deliberation, sentenced to life in prison.
Aftermath
As is so commonly the case in crimes of this nature, justice was served but nothing can fill the loss suffered by the victim’s family. If any silver lining can be found around this dark cloud, it’s that if you or a loved one begin to feel that suicide is a viable option, for whatever reason, it’s important to seek help before doing something that will ruin the lives of many.
